Benjamin Scharifker obtained first degree in Chemistry at Simón Bolívar University (USB) in Caracas, Venezuela, and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Southampton, UK. He joined the Chemistry Department of USB serving successively as Department Head, Research Dean, Vice-rector for Administration, Rector, and currently as Professor Emeritus. He was Assistant Director of the Hydrogen Center at Texas A&M University, visiting professor at Southampton and Bristol, Rector of Metropolitan University of Caracas, Secretary General of the Venezuelan Association for the Advancement of Science (AsoVAC), member of the board of directors at the National Scientific and Technological Research Council (CONICIT), President of the Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (ACFIMAN), and Secretary of the Association of University Rectors (AVERU). He has authored or co-authored more than 120 papers on interfacial electrochemistry, the kinetics of electrochemical reactions, electrochemical phase formation, conducting polymers, advanced oxidation of organics and energy conversion, and holds 3 U.S. patents. He is a Fellow of the Venezuelan Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (ACFIMAN), the Latin American Academy of Sciences (ACAL), and The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS).
