Zhigang Shuai received B. Sc. From Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou) in 1983 and his Ph.D. degree from Fudan University (Shanghai) in 1989. He worked as postdoc and then as research associate in the University of Mons, Belgium, for 11 years before he became a Hundred-Talent research professor in the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002. Since 2008, he joined the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University as a Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor. And starting from 2022, he joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, as a X. Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor in the School of Science and Engineering. He was elected to the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science (2008, elected Vice-President in 2018), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2009), Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea (2011), the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts of Belgium (2013), and the Scientific Board of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists (2017). He was the recipient of the National Outstanding Young Investigator‘s Fund (2004), National Talent Program of the Ministry of Personnel (2006), the Chinese Chemical Society – AkzoNobel Chemical Sciences Award (2012), Special Allowance from the People’s Republic of China State Council (2013), and the Prix Franco-Chinois of the French Chemical Society (2018). He received the First Class Award of the Beijing Municipal Natural Science Price (2020). He was elected to the Executive Council (2011-2014, 2015-2018, 2019-2022) and served as Deputy Secretary-General (2007-2010, 2011-2014, 2015-2018), and then elected as the Vice President (2019-2022) of the Chinese Chemical Society. He also serves as the Associate Member and then Titular Member of IUPAC Division I (Physical Chemistry and Biophysical Chemistry). He is an elected Member of the Executive Committee of IUPAC (2022-2025). He is an Associate Editor for Journal of Materials Chemistry A (2016-2019) and for Acta Chimica Sinica (2012-). He is a Deputy Editor for Research - A Science Partnership Journal (2022 - ). He serves in editorial board of: National Science Review (CAS, 2017 - ), J. Mater. Chem. C (RSC, 2014-), Theor. Chem. Acc. (Springer, 2010-), Sci China Chem. (CAS, 2008.1 - 2017.12; 2019, 6 -- ), Progress in Chemistry (CAS, 2009-), Science Bulletin (CAS, 2015 -), Adv. Theory Simul. His research interests focus on the development of computational methodologies for modeling functional materials. He extended the density matrix renormalization group theory for the excited state structures, light-emitting property, and nonlinear optical responses for conjugated polymers. He has devised computational schemes for the luminescence spectra and quantum efficiency, carrier mobility, thermoelectric conversion, and photovoltaic processes in organic/polymeric and layered nanomaterials. He have published over 440 papers in peer-reviewed journals with an h-index=84 and supervised 32 PhD theses by 2021. He is the Chairman of the 15th International Congress of Quantum Chemistry, Beijing, 2015. He is an invited plenary speaker for International Congress of Quantum Chemistry (2009 Helsinki, 2023 Bratislava), French Conference of Theoretical Chemistry (2014 Paris), International Conference of Theoretical Chemical Physics (2019 Tromso), International Conference on the Science and Technology of Synthetic Metals (2022 Glasgow).
