简介

Dr. Yau-Huei Wei graduated in 1974 from the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. He studied with late Professor Tsoo E. King in 1976 and earned his PhD degree in 1980 from the Department of Chemistry, State University of New York at Albany, New York, USA. He returned to Taiwan after postdoctoral training at Departments of Chemistry and Physics, SUNY at Albany. He was appointed as an associate professor during 1981-1985 at the Department of Biochemistry, National Yang-Ming Medical College, Taiwan. He was promoted to professor in 1985 and then served as the chairman of the department until 1991. He also served as the Director of the Common Instrumentation Center (1986-1989) and the Dean of Student Affairs (1989- 1991) of the College. Dr. Wei was appointed as the Director General, Department of Life Sciences, National Science Council of Taiwan, 2001-2005. He served as the Dean of Academic Affairs (2006-2008) and was a distinguished professor (2007-2009) of National Yang-Ming University. In August 2009, Dr. Wei was appointed as the President of Mackay Medical College until his retirement in August 2017. He has been actively participated in the promotion of local and international collaborations in biomedical research and mitochondrial medicine. Dr. Wei was the permanent delegate to the General Assembly of IUBMB from The Taiwan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, where he served as the President during 1991-1993. He and several founding members established Asian Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine, and served as the Vice-President (2003-2005) and President (2005-2007) of the Society. He has been the President of Taiwan Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (2006-2010). Since 2006, Dr. Wei has been serving on the editorial board of Biochimica et Biophysica Acta-General Subjects and several prestigious international journals including Mitochondrion, Frontiers in Genetics, Biomedical Journal, and International Journal of Molecular Science and as the guest editor for Frontiers in Bioscience-Landmark Ed.. Dr. Wei's research has focused on “molecular and cellular biological studies of mitochondrial diseases, aging-related diseases and cancer” and “crosstalk between mitochondria and nucleus and metabolic shift in the differentiation of stem cells”. He was one of the first scientists to show that mitochondrial function decline and accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are important contributory factors of human aging. His research team was one of the earliest to demonstrate that oxidative stress, oxidative damages and metabolic reprogramming elicited by mtDNA mutations contribute to the pathophysiology of many mitochondrial diseases. In the past decade, Dr. Wei and his students have established that the biogenesis and respiratory function of mitochondria and antioxidant enzymes are upregulated in the differentiation process of stem cells and are downregulated during the generation of iPSCs in a coordinate manner. He has published >430 research papers and >30 review articles in SCI journals in bioenergetics, molecular and cell biology, free radical biology and medicine, aging research, mitochondrial medicine, stem cell research, and cell stress responses. Dr. Wei is currently the Director of the Center for Mitochondrial Medicine and Free Radical Research, Changhua Christian Hospital, Changhua City, Taiwan.
