Yandong Wang is currently a Changjiang distinguished professor in the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials, University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). His main research interest focuses on the microstructural characterizations using the synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron scattering methods, with emphasis on the stress analysis, texture measurements, deformation and phase transformation in metallic materials. He is now leading a research group consisting in the field of fundamental deformation and phase transformation of advanced metallic materials.
He received his B. Eng. and M. Sc. Degrees from the Northeastern University (NEU), China (1982-1989). He got his Ph.D. in 1993 at USTB, China. During 1994-1998, he joined in NEU as lecturer and then associate professor. During 1998-2004, he conducted his researches as various research positions at the Studsvik Neutron Research Laboratory with Uppsala University, Sweden and at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. He then returned to China working as a full professor at NEU since 2004. He joined into Beijing Institute of Technology in 2009 and then moved to USTB in 2013. During the past decade, he worked also as visiting scientist or visiting professor in universities in France and USA.
He recently discovered a new phenomenon called as “supercritical elasticity” in some alloys exhibiting non-hysteretic superelasticity, excellent fatigue performance and huge high-energy-storage capability, which is elucidated by the theory on the stress-induced continuous phase transition. This finding and theory challenges the classic martensitic transformation theory existing over 7 decades. His group developed some new-type shape memory alloys, being one family of the advanced smart materials with the superelastic behavior, shape memory effect, and colossal output of strain or caloric effect driven by magnetic or stress field. His group is also pioneer in exploring the service safety of some important industrial components and products with the application of the high-energy X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction techniques. He received many awards from the international conferences and Chinese Government, including the Young Scientist & Engineer Award in the Eleventh International Conference on Textures of Materials and the Science Technology Development Awards by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China and the Ministry of Metallurgy of China. He received the NSFC Outstanding Young Scientist Award in 2007. He was awarded a Changjiang professorship by MOE in 2008. His research team was awarded as one of the excellent Sci-Tech innovation teams by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China in 2019. He has over 450 publications in some referred SCI journals, including Science, Nature, Nature Materials, PNAS. His work was cited 17,000+ by the SCI journal papers, including some achievements reported, highlighted or reviewed by the magazines such as Science or text books etc. He also delivered over 50 invited lectures or talks in many international conferences, workshops, or universities/institutes in USA and Europe.
