Dr. Xueji Zhang is currently Vice President and Vice Chairman of the University Council at Shenzhen University, where he also holds the title of University Distinguished Professor—the institution's highest academic rank—within the School of Biomedical Engineering. He concurrently serves as President of the Shenzhen Institute of Healthcare Security. In addition, he is a National Chair Professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) and Executive President of the National Institute of Precision Medicine and Health in Beijing.
He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from Wuhan University in 1989 and 1994, respectively, and completed postdoctoral research between 1995 and 1999 at the National Institute of Chemistry in Slovenia, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and New Mexico State University in the United States. From 1999 to 2010, he held progressive leadership roles at World Precision Instruments, Inc. in the USA, advancing from Research Scientist to Senior Vice President. Concurrently, from 2001 to 2017, he served as Adjunct Associate Professor and later Adjunct Professor at the University of South Florida. In 2010, he joined USTB as a National Chair Professor.
Dr. Zhang’s interdisciplinary research integrates chemistry, biology, materials science, and medicine, AI with a focus on biosensing, biomedicine, and biomaterials. His laboratory develops intelligent, wearable, and novel biosensors, along with advanced tools for investigating free radicals, cancer biomarkers, and physiological changes associated with disease. This work informs the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. His research portfolio also includes drug delivery systems, new energy technologies, and natural medicines.
He serves as Editor-in-Chief for RSC Sensors & Diagnostics, Journal of AI Chemistry, and The American Journal of Biomedical Sciences, and is an editorial board member for 25 international journals. His honors include election as a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Engineering; Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the International Academy of AI Sciences, and the Royal Society of Chemistry; and designation as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Technology and Engineering Institute. He has received numerous awards, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Medal, the Huawei Outstanding Contribution Medal, China’s National Innovation Pioneer Award, the Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education, the Outstanding Contribution Award for Chemical Sensors in China, Scientist of the Year and Outstanding Engineer awards in China, the Simon Fellowship from ICSC-World Lab, the Chen Tingzuo Immunology Science Award, and the World Integrative Medicine Outstanding Contribution Award.
Recognized among the world’s top scientists, Dr. Zhang has been listed by Stanford University as one of the leading researchers globally from 2019 to 2025. In 2025, Scholar GPS ranked him in the top 0.05% of scientists worldwide, placing him 2nd in Biosensors and 4th in Biomedical Engineering globally.
His scholarly output includes over 200 granted patents, more than 900 peer-reviewed journal articles with over 60,000 citations and an H-index of 122, 9 books, and over 300 keynote and invited lectures at national and international conferences. His work bridges academia, industry, and policy, resulting in more than 40 technology licenses, the incubation of 17 high-tech companies, and active contributions to governmental regulatory frameworks.
