Professor Vivekanand Jha, MBBS, MD, DM, FAMS, FRCP, received his basic medical training at Patna Medical College, Patna (Bihar) India. He was selected for postgraduate training at the Postgraduate Institute of medical education and research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India where he did his Internal Medicine residency followed by Nephrology fellowship under the mentorship of Late Professor Kirpal Singh Chugh. He joined on the faculty of Nephrology department at PGIMER as a clinical nephrologist in 1992. Some years later, with support from the International Society of Nephrology, he went off to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Boston, United States for a basic science research fellowship in the lab of Professor Vikas P Sukhatme. Upon his return to India in 2001, he established a basic science research laboratory, which became the first such lab in a nephrology division in India. This was alongside his clinical responsibilities and a flourishing program of clinical research. In 2006, he was entrusted with the responsibility of setting up the Department of Regenerative and Translational Medicine at PGIMER by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. During this period, he rose to the position of Professor of Nephrology and Head of the Department of Translational and Regenerative Medicine. In 2013, he moved to The George Institute for Global Health (TGI) as the Executive Director of the India office and Professor of Nephrology at the University of Oxford. He came back to PGIMER in 2015 for a brief period before resuming his position at the George Institute and the University of Oxford. In 2020, he moved to Imperial College London as part of the move of the George Institute.
