简介

Vanderlei Salvador Bagnato concurrently obtained his Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a degree in Materials Engineering from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in 1981. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1987. He is currently a Full Professor at the University of São Paulo and served as the Director of the São Carlos Institute of Physics from 2018 to 2022. Throughout his career, he has published approximately 1,000 articles in peer-reviewed journals, authored over 40 book chapters, published 8 books, and edited an additional 8 publications. He has advised more than 140 master's dissertations and doctoral theses in the fields of Physics, Dentistry, and Medicine, and has supervised over 80 postdoctoral researchers. Having received numerous awards and distinctions, his research focuses on Atomic Physics and Applications of Optics in Health Sciences, with a specific emphasis on cold atoms, Bose-Einstein condensates, photodynamic therapy for cancer, and microbiological control. He is an elected member of several prestigious academies, including the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (Vatican), the National Academy of Sciences (NAS/USA), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE/USA), and the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (TAMEST). Additionally, he coordinates a Research Center where basic and applied sciences seamlessly coexist, and he is actively involved in technological innovation and science outreach initiatives.
