Professor Vadim Silberschmidt was appointed to the Chair of Mechanics of Materials at the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University, UK in 2000. He heads the Mechanics of Advanced Materials Research Group. He is a Charted Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineering and Institute of Physics, where he also chaired Applied Mechanics Group in 2008-2011. Vadim Silberschmidt chairs the Technical Committee 14 “Integrity of Biomedical and Biological Materials” of the European Structural Integrity Society. He is Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier Series in Mechanics of Advanced Materials, “Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites” (Sage) and four-volume “Comprehensive Mechanics of Materials” (Elsevier), Associate Editor of “Shock and Vibration” (Wiley) and "Journal of Vibration and Control" (Sage) and a member of Editorial Boards of international journals “Materials Science and Engineering A: Structural Materials: Properties, Microstructure and Processing” (Elsevier); “Computers, Materials & Continua” (Tech Science Press); “International Journal of Automotive Composites” (Inderscience); “Reviews on Advanced Materials Science” (De Gruyter); “Defence Technology” (Elsevier), "Advanced Manufacturing: Polymer & Composites Science" (Taylor & Francis); “Discover Mechanical Engineering” (Springer) and “Science and Engineering of Composite Materials” (De Gruyter). He has co-authored ten research monographs and some 800 peer reviewed scientific papers on mechanics and micromechanics of deformation, damage and fracture in advanced materials. Prof. Silberschmidt has had a large portfolio of research grants funded by different funding bodies. In the last 15 years he has been a PI or CI on the projects funded by the EPSRC, EU, European Defence Agency, the Royal Society, the British Council and various national and international institutions and companies with a total value in excess of £16m. He has many years of experience of proposing and leading of, and participating in, large multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary research projects funded by diverse bodies. He has been a member of a Coordination Board and Management Teams of multiple projects, including international ones. Mechanics of Advanced Materials Research Group has some 30+ members and a significant throughput of researchers. Prof. Silberschmidt has (co-)supervised 90+ PhD students.
