I am Director of the Big Data Institute and faculty in the Nuffield Departments of Population Health and Medicine at the University of Oxford. I joined Oxford in 2026 after a 23-year career at the University of California San Diego, where I served as Division Chief of Human Genomics and Precision Medicine and continue to hold an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Medicine. I also lead or co-lead several federally funded research initiatives, including the Cancer Cell Map Initiative, the Bridge2AI Functional Genomics Data Generation Program, and the ARPA-H ADAPT Precision Oncology Center.
Over the past 25 years, my lab has helped shape the fields of computational and systems biology, with applications spanning cancer, aging, and biomedical AI. My early work contributed to defining Systems Biology as a discipline, including its conceptual foundations and application to human disease. I am best known for developing systematic approaches to map molecular networks in human cells, using these networks to interpret complex disease genetics, and building interpretable AI systems for precision medicine aimed at matching the right drug to the right patient. My work also helped introduce the epigenetic clock, which measures biological aging using genome-wide DNA methylation patterns.
