Sukru Emre

Dr. Emre received his medical degree and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Istanbul. He received his post-doctoral training in hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Istanbul followed by a transplant fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He also completed two transplantation research fellowships, one at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn and another at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Emre is an expert in adult and pediatric liver transplantations and nationally and internationally renowned for his work. He has performed more than 2000 liver transplants, of which the youngest patient was 16 days old and the oldest was 80 years old. His special interests are split-liver and living donor liver transplants in both adults and pediatric patients. He is also an expert in hepatobiliary surgery including resection for liver cancer, portal hypertension surgery including portal hypertension in pediatrics, and repair of complex bile duct injuries. Dr. Emre’s research interests include hepatocyte transplantation for genetic/metabolic liver disease in children, acute liver failure and transplanting patients with hepatitis B, C and liver cancer. He has an additional interest in biliary atresia and rare cholestatic diseases in children. Dr. Emre built Yale Liver Transplant Programs in adult and pediatrics and turned the Yale transplant program into a regional leader in the evaluation and treatment of liver disease. He also led the teams that provide liver, kidney, pancreas, and heart transplantation to patients from throughout the world. He has more than 250 papers published in peer reviewed journals and 10 book chapters. Dr. Emre has been recognized by many transplant organizations including TRIO, NKF, and DonateLife CT, for his dedication to his patients, his work to increase organ donation in the field of transplantation. He has been selected as one of the Top Doctors of America by New York Magazine and Castle Colony for 10 consecutive years. Dr. Emre is a member of many surgical/transplantation societies including ACS, ASTS, ATS, AASLD, TTS, IPTA, TTCCA, TSS, UNOS. He has served on multiple UNOS and ASTS committees. He currently serves on the editorial board of Annals of Medical Sciences, Pediatric Transplantation, Liver Transplantation, Transplantation Proceeding, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Euroasian Journal of Medicine (International Advisory Board member), World Journal of Transplantation, and the Turkish Journal of Surgery.
