Stephen has utilised many approaches to study the pathophysiology and treatment of asthma which have identified novel therapeutic targets and informed guidelines on management. He has published >1000 peer review outputs, is a past president of the British Society for Allergy, Clinical Immunology, British Thoracic Society, British Association for Lung Research and the Collegium International Allergologicum. He has a particular interest in air pollution and in 2020 provided the medical evidence for having this named on the death certificate of Ella Kissi-Debrah, following a new inquest of a 9-year-old girl in London who died of asthma. He has been recipient of a number of personal awards including Five Honorary University Degrees, The King Faisal International Prize in Medicine, the J Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine (Canada), the British Thoracic Society and RCP President’s Medals, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Paul Ehrlich Award, Honorary Fellow Awards from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the World Allergy Organisation and the Asia Pacific Association of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He was a Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, Founder Chair of the DH Medical Committee on Air Pollutants, Chair of the DEFRA Expert Group on Air Quality Standards and Member of WHO Air Quality Guideline Working Groups. He was a recent member of the UK Natural Environment Research Council, is Special Advisor to the Royal College Physicians on Air Quality, Member of their Advisory Groups on Health Inequalities and Sustainability and is UK Research and Innovation Clean Air Champion. He was appointed CBE in 2011 for Clinical Science and Knighted in 2020 for Medical Research.
