Stephen G. Young

Stephen G. Young, M.D. is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Early in his career, Dr. Young investigated the role of apolipoprotein (apo-) B in lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis. In recent years, Dr. Young’s work at UCLA has worked on two research areas—basic mechanisms of plasma triglyceride metabolism and the functions of nuclear lamins in health and disease. His laboratory identified an endothelial cell protein, GPIHBP1, that is crucial for transporting lipoprotein lipase (LPL) to the capillary lumen. His group also showed that the LPL–GPIHBP1 complex on endothelial cells is crucial for the margination of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins along the capillary lumen. Dr. Young’s group has also led the way in understanding the importance of posttranslational modifications of nuclear lamins in health and disease. Dr. Young has published numerous papers in top scientific journals, lectured at national and international meetings, and been awarded several research awards, including the Jung Prize in Medicine in 2010. He is a corresponding member abroad of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2024, he was named a Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Young received his bachelor’s degree in History from Princeton University in 1974. He obtained his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1978, where he received multiple academic honors. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1981 and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 1983. Before moving to UCLA in 2004, Dr. Young served as a professor of medicine at UCSF and an investigator at a research institute affiliated with UCSF.
