I am a global change scientist researching and educating about various aspects of environmental change, sustainability and the responses of today's societies to the challenges the world faces. -- 1990s – My academic career started in environmental and analytical chemistry. For my PhD and early career, I worked on chemical characterisation and global budget estimation of the organic component of atmospheric nitrogen deposition, with a particular focus on the marine environment. -- 2000s – I then became involved in interdisciplinary studies linking methods and insights from social and economic research with those of biophysical global environmental change science, in application contexts including integrated coastal zone management, flood and coastal erosion risk, and air and water pollution policy. I also worked with local and regional government, as a volunteer and as a consultant, on applied studies of democratic local planning and decision-making. -- 2010s – A core strand of my work has been integrative research in Earth system analysis and global sustainability science: the science "behind" the influential planetary boundaries framework and efforts to translate its insights for operational contexts. -- 2020s – In recent years, my work has taken a further transdisciplinary turn, combining critique, issue exploration and real-world engagement at the evolving interfaces of science, business, policy and wider society that shape options for action on global sustainability. I teach and supervise students and mentor early career researchers, and serve as an advisor to research organisations, research programmes, and academic education and training programmes. I have served as associate editor for various journals across the full multi-discipline scope of my own research; and actively serve as reviewer of academic literature and research proposals for national and EU-level funding bodies. I advocate against the academic precariat and try to support and promote greater diversity, inclusion and equality in academia.
