My research interests are centered on the translational study of the relationship between metabolism and health, with a particular emphasis on understanding how the human body dynamically responds to exercise training and dietary interventions. This interdisciplinary work aims to bridge basic science and clinical application by exploring physiological, molecular, and behavioral mechanisms that link physical activity, nutrition, and chronic disease prevention and management. Specifically, my research examines how different exercise modalities (aerobic, resistance, or combined training) and nutritional strategies (macronutrient composition, caloric restriction, or dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet) influence key metabolic outcomes such as insulin sensitivity, inflammation, lipid metabolism, and body composition. A substantial part of my work also explores the interindividual variability in these responses, seeking to identify moderators such as age, sex, baseline physical fitness, genetic background, and comorbidities. This precision-oriented perspective supports the development of more personalized interventions to optimize metabolic health across diverse populations.
In addition to core metabolic markers, my research has also expanded into muscle physiology, mitochondrial function, and the role of immune-metabolic interactions—particularly in populations with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative conditions like mild cognitive impairment and Parkinson’s disease. My work often incorporates biomarker analyses, advanced imaging techniques, functional testing, and the use of wearable technologies to capture physiological responses in real-world settings. I am strongly committed to international collaboration, which has greatly enriched my research perspective. Over the past decade, I have participated in or led multicenter projects and academic partnerships across Colombia, Spain, Chile, Brazil, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These collaborations have focused on the adaptation of evidence-based exercise and nutrition interventions to different sociocultural and healthcare contexts, aiming to improve population health outcomes and reduce health disparities.
Since 2019, I have been affiliated with the Department of Health Sciences at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), and actively collaborate with Navarrabiomed–Biomedical Research Centre and the Navarra Health Research Institute (IDISNA) in Pamplona, Navarra, Spain. Within this framework, I am involved in both research and graduate teaching, contributing to the training of future professionals in health sciences, physical activity, and biomedical research. My long-term goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the complex mechanisms through which lifestyle interventions improve health, with the ultimate aim of informing clinical practice, public health policy, and preventive medicine. I am particularly interested in translating scientific evidence into practical guidelines that are feasible, scalable, and culturally appropriate across various populations and healthcare systems.
