Richard Smith

Dr. Smith was a Battelle Fellow and Chief Scientist within the Biological Sciences Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory before his retirement in 2024. His research interests included the development of advanced analytical methods and instrumentation, with particular emphasis on high resolution separations and mass spectrometry, and their applications in biological and biomedical research. Dr. Smith was also the Director of Proteomic and Pan-omic Research at PNNL, and the Director of the NIH Research Resource for Integrative Biology. He is the author/co-author of approximately 1200 peer-reviewed journal articles and recipient of 80 patents. Other awards and recognition include twelve R&D 100 Awards and R&D Magazine 2010 Scientist of the Year, 2013 ASMS Distinguished Contribution Award, HUPO Discovery Award for Proteomic Sciences (2009), Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2007), and American Chemical Society Award for Analytical Chemistry (2003).
