Ramon Martinez is a system engineer with formal education and training in biostatistics, epidemiology, and public health, interested in the application of health metrics science, data sciences, and data visualization in epidemiology and public health. He works for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) as a specialist in health metrics. He has been involved in multiple international health projects and initiatives, including the development of SIGEpi, a geographic information system (GIS) for applications in epidemiology and public health; strengthening of national health information systems in countries of the Americas; the development and implementation of the PAHO's public health intelligence platform (PHIP), among others. He currently applies health metrics and data science methods to quantify and monitor the trends of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors and assess the impact of NCDs on population health. Before becoming a staff member of the PAHO/WHO, he coordinated and lead the Department of Computing and Biostatistics at the Institute of Tropical Medicine "Pedro Kouri" (IPK), Havana. Cuba.
