Peter J. Schwartz, MD, is the Director of the Center for Cardiac Arrhythmias of Genetic Origin and of the Laboratory for Cardiovascular Genetics at the IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Milan, Italy; Extraordinary Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch, and Honorary Professor at the Department of Medicine and member of the Scientific Board of the Cape Heart Institute of the University of Cape Town, South Africa. From 1995 to 2013 he was Professor and Chairman of Cardiology at the University of Pavia, Italy. His major areas of expertise are the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and life-threatening arrhythmias, the long QT syndrome, and the risk stratification for arrhythmic deaths. During his career he received numerous awards, among them the “Fondation Lefoulon-Delalande Prix scientifique dans le domaine cardio-vasculaire” (2019), and the 2024 ESC Gold Medal, given in recognition of his exceptional contribution to cardiovascular medicine . Prof. Schwartz serves the leading cardiology journals as a member of the Editorial Board and/or as a reviewer. Since September 2020 he is the Associate Editor for Genetics of the European Heart Journal. Since January 2023 he is the Associate Editor for Sudden Cardiac Death and Risk Stratification of Europace.
