Professor Peter Sly is the Director, Children's Health and Environment Program and former Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Children's Health and Environment. Professor Sly is a NHMRC Leadership Fellow (L3) and an emeritus paediatric respiratory physician with extensive research experience in respiratory physiology, developmental immunology and children's environmental health. Professor Sly’s research aims to understand the mechanisms underlying chronic childhood lung diseases in order to improve clinical management and to delay or prevent their onset, with consequent reductions in adult lung diseases. A combination of basic science, longitudinal cohort studies and translation of research findings into clinical practice, including clinical trials, are included in three main areas: asthma, cystic fibrosis and children’s environmental health
Professor Sly has published a over 1000 scholarly publications. These publications are generally in the top general journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, Lancet, Science, PNAS and British Medical Journal; and the highest ranking journals in the field, including the Lancet Respiratory Medicine, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Thorax, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Environmental Health Perspectives, and Science of the Total Environment. Professor Sly serves or has served on editorial boards for international journals including, Pediatr Pulmonol, Thorax, Encyclopaedia Respir Med, BMC Pulm Med and the J Appl Physiol. Professor Sly is currently co-editor in chief for Reviews in Environmental Health. Professor Sly has served terms as an Associate Editor for the three major respiratory journals, AJRCCM (twice), Thorax and ERJ.
Professor Sly has an active interest in children’s environmental health for over 20 years. I established and directed the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) for Research on Children’s Environmental Health in Perth and after moving to Brisbane established the Children’s Health and Environment Program and the WHOCC for Children’s Health and Environment. He has been a Director of the Pacific Basin Consortium for Environment and Health since 2005 and Chairman of the Board (2009-19). He is actively engaged in WHO Networks in Children’s Environmental Health and in e-Waste and have been a Commissioner of several Lancet Commissions. He serves or has served on International Advisory Boards and committees, including: WHO Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Disease; WHO network of Collaborating Centres in Children’s Environmental Health; the CIHR funded A Shared Future; Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study, Canada; and the Drakenstein Infant Lung Health Study, Paarl, South Africa.
