Graduated in Medicine from Manchester University in 1979 before going onto specialize in medical microbiology. Awarded MD for research on Candida albicans. Since 2001 I have been Professor of Health Protection now Professor in Medicine in the Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia and till 2016 Honorary Consultant in Medical Microbiology and Virology at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
My primary resarch interests are in the epidemiology and transmission of emerging infectious diseases. I have worked many different infectious diseases including Candida albicans, Cryptosporidium, dengue fever, Ebola, Norovirus and covid. I have undertaken laboratory based and field epidemiological research in the UK and overseas, especially Africa, South East Asia and The Caribbean.
