• Clinical epidemiologist with over 30 years of academic experience working in the field of epidemiology and public health
• Major research interests in environmental, genetic and nutritional causes of disease with specialist knowledge of small-area health statistics, epidemiological methods, cohort studies, biobanking, molecular and nutritional epidemiology, risk factors for hypertension and cardiovascular disease
• Extensive experience in the design and management of epidemiological studies and the analysis and interpretation of public health and epidemiological data from large national/international population-based studies
• Innovative contributions to the development and application of methods for the investigation of disease risks in small areas through directorship of the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit since 1987
• Major contribution to the epidemiological evidence showing that high sodium intake, low potassium intake, high body weight, high alcohol intake, low vegetable protein intake and other dietary factors are important contributors to adverse blood pressure levels in individuals and populations
• Pioneer in the application of high-throughput metabolic profiling (metabolomics) and other omic technologies to epidemiological data
• Expertise in Biobanking as a founder member of the UK Biobank Steering Committee and chair of the Enhancements working group. Played a key role in development of protocols for sample collection, processing and storage
• National leadership role in Health Informatics through leadership of Informatics and Biobanking research theme of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre and as associate director of the Health Data Research UK London hub
• National leadership role in dementias research as UK-DRI Professor in the Dementia Research Institute at Imperial College London. Programme lead for research programme on Linking genetic, epidemiology and metabolic phenotyping in dementia in the context of ageing, environment and lifestyle
• National leadership role in public health as PI of the DHSC-sponsored REACT Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission Study monitoring the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) across England
