Paul D. N. Hebert

Paul Hebert did his BSc in biology at Queen’s University, his PhD in genetics at Cambridge, and then held the Royal Society’s Rutherford Fellowship at the University of Sydney and at the Natural History Museum (London). He is former Professor of Biology and Director of the Great Lakes Institute at the University of Windsor, Chair of the Department of Zoology at Guelph, and Chair of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews. Hebert has held the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Biodiversity since 2001 and was founding Director of the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario. He is currently Director of the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics at Guelph and Scientific Director of the International Barcode of Life Project, the largest research program ever undertaken in biodiversity science. Among his 102 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, 47 now hold faculty positions. He has received more than $100 million in research grants, funding which has supported nearly 500 publications which have attracted more than 60,000 citations. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and received the 2018 Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences. He holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Waterloo, Western, and Windsor.
