Patrick Couvreur

Pr Patrick COUVREUR is Full Professor of Pharmacy at the Paris-Sud University (since 1984) and holder of the chair of “Innovation Technologique” (2009-2010) at the prestigious « Collège de France ». Since 2009, he is appointed as a Senior Member of the “Institut Universitaire de France”. He was also the recipient of an “ERC Advanced Grant” (2010-2015) and an "ERC proof of concept grant" (2015-2016), in addition to many other european and national grants. Pr Patrick COUVREUR’s contributions in the field of nanomedicine and drug delivery are highly recognized around the world with almost 600 peer review research publications (Web of Science H-index 93 and over 36,000 citations; Google Scholar H-index 124 and over 66,000 citations). His research is interdisciplinary, at the interface between Physico-Chemistry of Colloids, Polymer Chemistry, Material Science, Molecular and Cellular Biology and Experimental Pharmacology. Patrick COUVREUR’s research has led to the development of a nanomedicine for the treatment of multidrug resistant hepatocarcinoma, reaching phase III clinical trials and he was the founder of two start-up companies (Bioalliance which entered the stock market in 2005 and Medsqual). The major scientific contribution of Patrick COUVREUR to the Pharmaceutical Sciences is also recognized by numerous international (the “2004 Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress Award”, the prestigious “Host Madsen Medal” from FIP in 2007, the “European Pharmaceutical Scientist Award” of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2009, the European Inventor Award 2013 given by the European Patent Office, the Speiser Award 2014 from ETH and the Higuchi Award 2016 from Japan Academy) and national awards (the “Prix Galien 2009” and the “Médaille de l’Innovation" 2012 of the CNRS). Patrick COUVREUR is also a Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Ghent (Belgium) since 2018. His appointment as a member of 8 academies (Académie des Sciences, Académie des Technologies, Académie Nationale de Médecine and Académie Nationale de Pharmacie in France, as well as the Académie Royale de Médecine in Belgium, the Royal Academy of Pharmacy in Spain, the US National Academy of Medicine and the US National Academy of Engineering, two of the three national academies in USA) is another recognition of major scientific and scholarly contributions of Patrick COUVREUR. In 2018,on decision of the President of the French Republic, he was decorated as a "Knight of the Légion d'Honneur"("Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur"), the highest honor in France.
