Pancras C. W. Hogendoorn is currently a Professor of Medicine, History, and Arts at Leiden University and served as Professor of Pathology at the Leiden University Medical Center (1999- 2025). He has an appointment as a guest Professor of Pathology at Oxford University, the Free University of Brussels and Airlangga University in Surabaya. He graduated from Medical School and completed his doctoral research at Leiden University. The title of his doctoral thesis (1990) reads ‘Immunopathogenetic mechanisms in experimental glomerulonephritis’. Subsequently, he specialised in oncologic pathology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in Amsterdam and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In March 1999, he was appointed full Professor in Pathology at Leiden. The title of his inaugural lecture was ‘Form Follows Function’. As a Pathologist, his main interest is in the (molecular) pathology of bone and soft tissue tumours, next to experimental renal immunology and the history of medicine. For more than 30 years, Prof. Hogendoorn has researched molecular pathogenesis and diagnostics of bone and soft-tissue tumours. He has over 450 scientific publications, various influential reviews and 23 chapters of books to his name. Prof. Hogendoorn has held several national (such as chairman of the Netherlands Committee for Bone Tumours) and international offices at scientific organisations. He served as Dean of Leiden University Medical Centre for nearly 13 years, until March 1, 2024. Prizes and has several honourable appointments: Pancras C. W. Hogendoorn is a member of the Academia Europaea, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, and an honorary member of the Belgium Society of Pathology. He received the European Oswald Vander Vekenprijs (2008), the Corrine Farrel Award of the International Skeletal Society both in 1994 and 1998, the Jeremy Jass Prize for excellent research in the field of pathology in 2011 and 2015, the Vitaal Cup for his extraordinary effort to ensure equal participation of women in higher academic, medical and administrative positions and holds a doctorate honoris causa of Semmelweis University, Budapest Hungary. In 2025, he received the Honorary Alumni Award from Nagasaki University School of Medicine for his significant contributions to the development of medical research and education.
