Pablo Alonso‐Coello

PhD in Medicine and specialist in Family Practice. Senior Researcher at the Iberoamerican Cochrane Centre, and coordinator of the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services group of the Biomedical Research Institute Sant Pau (IIB Sant Pau). Researcher of the CIBER in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP) network. Director of the Scientific Committee of the National Guideline Program from the Spanish Ministry of Health. He also has been a member of the GRADE working group for over 10 years now, is member of the GRADE Guidance Group, and is in charge of the Barcelona GRADE center, based at the IIB Sant Pau. He is also a member of the Guidelines International Network Board. He has a background in family practice with a special interest in incorporating patients and the public views into health care recommendations. He is deeply involved in methods research in guidelines and systematic reviews and he has participated and led randomized clinical trials in perioperative medicine and primary care. He coordinates a research group about clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) methodology that is highly productive, and has achieved considerable impact in this field internationally. The group has several publicly funded research projects, both national and international. The projects are mostly based on CPGs and systematic reviews methodology, with a special focus towards improving their use in clinical decision making. The group is also involved in improving the role of patients in guidelines and decision-making. In the field of CPGs he has participated in over 40 national and several international guidelines, and has played a major role in the development of the methodological handbook of the National Program of CPGs development of the Ministry of Health. At the moment he is supervising several PhD candidates, and one postdoctoral researcher. Several of them are funded through competitive research contracts by the Spanish Ministry of Health and the European Commission. Since 2016 Pablo Alonso has appeared on the list of the world's most cited researchers of the last decade published by Clarivate Analytics, a former branch of the Thomson Reuters agency dedicated to intellectual property and science.
