Oluwole Daniel Makinde is an eminent Professor of Applied Mathematics and Computation with over 26 years of professorial experience in South African Universities. He is currently affiliated with the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Additionally, he acts as a visiting distinguished Professor to several other universities within and outside the African continent. Before joining the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University, Professor Makinde held the position of Senior Professor and Chair of Postgraduate Studies at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa from 2008 to 2013. He also served as Full Professor & Head of the Applied Mathematics Department at the University of Limpopo, South Africa, from 1998 to 2008. In 1987, he earned his BSc (first-class honours) in mathematics with a Faculty prize as the top graduating candidate from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, where he also obtained his MSc degree in Applied Mathematics. In 1996, he completed his PhD in Applied Mathematics and Computations at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom under a prestigious Commonwealth scholarship.
Professor Makinde has received numerous awards for his contributions to science, engineering, technology, and innovation in Africa and beyond. These include the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Award in 2011, the South African National Science and Technology Forum and the National Research Foundation (NRF) T.W. Kambule Senior Researcher Award in 2009/2010, and the Nigerian National Honor Award titled the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2014. He received the Research Excellence Award at the University of Limpopo (1999-2007), the Research Excellence Award at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (2008- 2012), and the Research Excellence Award at the Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University (2016-2023). He also won the Chancellor Award for outstanding research excellence at Stellenbosch University in 2019, the Obada Prize for Distinguished International Researcher Award (2021), the African Mathematical Union and Pan African Congress of Mathematician Award for Outstanding Researcher and Mentorship (2022), Highly Commendable Published Paper and Outstanding Reviewer Awards for the International Journal of Numerical Methods in Heat and Fluid Flow from Emerald Group Publishing (UK) in 2014-2015, and Journal of Central South University (Springer Publisher) in China in 2020, In addition to these, Prof Makinde was honored with the Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS) in 2012, Fellow of the Papua New Guinea Mathematical Society in 2013, Fellow of the International Academy of Physical Sciences (FIAPS) in 2018, and the Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society in 2023. Professor Makinde is on the editorial board of several reputable academic journals and also served as a reviewer for many reputable international academic journals worldwide, and the South African National Research Foundation. Furthermore, Professor Makinde authored and edited over 12 advanced research textbooks in the field of applied mathematics and engineering science with particular focus on fluid mechanics with heat and mass transfer mechanism. He also published over 700 research papers in several reputable high impact international journals. His research covers a broad range of topics, including mathematical biology, fluid mechanics, nanofluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, hydrodynamic stability, dynamical systems, thermal science, combustion theory, computational mathematics, and improved perturbation techniques. The main objective of his research is to use mathematical theories and methodologies to gain insights into the dynamics of various engineering and biological systems that are of industrial, environmental, medical, and social interest. He has supervised over 43 PhDs, 75 MSc candidates, and several postdoc in the field of Applied Mathematics and Computations across the African continent. He also served as an external examiner for many universities within and outside the African continent. He organized several conferences, workshops, and symposia within and outside the African continent and delivered keynote research papers at several national and international conferences and workshops worldwide. Professor Makinde is presently the Vice-President of the African Mathematical Union for Southern Africa region (2022–2026). He served as the Secretary General of the African Mathematical Union (2009–2017), the vice-president and general secretary of the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association (2002–2006), a founding academic advisory board member of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (2003–2005), an associate member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (2000–2005) and an associate member of the National Institute of Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS) in South Africa.
