Professor of Legal Medicine at the University of Santiago (USC) (since 1989). Director of the Galician Public Foundation for Genomic Medicine (SERGAS-Xunta de Galicia) (since 1997), Director of the National Genotyping Center-ISCIII (since 2002).
In a first step of his career Angel Carracedo activity was mainly devoted to population and forensic genetics, becoming an outstanding forensic geneticist, pioneering the use of new technologies in forensic identification and creating a center where visiting scientists from all over the world are trained. His group leads scientific production in the SCI area of legal and forensic science worldwide Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine (USC) from 1995 to 2015. From 2002 he has been working also in the clinical genetics area where he has set up the Galician Foundation of Genomic Medicine (current director). This center is carrying out most of the molecular genetics and cytogenetic analysis requested by the Galician system of Health, covering a population of 3.5 million inhabitants and being one of the most important public genetic services in Spain. Most of AC recent research is now mainly concentrated in the genetics of mendelian and complex traits and particularly psychiatric disorders. He is coordinating the IMPACT project (ISCIII) and the mirror group of the 1+M Genome Initiative and he has participated in more than 20 international projects (coordinating 7 of them).
AC has published 8 books and over 800 papers in SCI journals (HI 110, and more than 60,000 cites. Former president of different scientific societies on Cancer, Pharmacogenomics and Forensic Science. Current president of the International Academy of Legal Medicine. The Genomic Medicine group that he created and directs consists of 10 research groups, several technological platforms and more than 100 people. His practical activity includes more than five thousand medical-legal expertises between 1978 and 2000, and since 1997 an intense activity in clinical Genetics, carrying out the center that directs about 40,000 annual diagnoses. The main current lines of research are focus in personalized medicine including genetics of cancer and psychiatric diseases, rare diseases and pharmacogenomics.
He has published 8 books and more than 800 articles in international journal including numerous articles in Nature, Science, NEJM, Cell, Nature Genetics, in addition to the main journals of medical genetics, cancer and forensic medicine. His papers currently receive an average of 6000 citations per year. He has supervised 105 doctoral theses, all with the highest qualification and 54 of them with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award.
Member of the board of national and international scientific societies, an international research centers and regulatory bodies (European Medicines Agency -EMA, Forensic DNA Regulator UK, CNUFADN, Ministry of Justice). President of the International Academy of Legal Medicine and former president of the ISFG. Member of the Advisory Board of 12 research centers in Spain and abroad.Member of the Advisory Board of the International Criminal Court and the International Red Cross.
Hi has set up two spin-offs (Haleth-in-Code and PharmaXen). President of the Kaertor Foundation (for early drug research) and co-coordinator of Innopharma platform, integrated in the European Network ESFRI EU-OPENSCREEN. The Innopharma -Kaertor Foudation have launched different open science innovative initiatives such as I2D2 or Cancer Innova in public-private partnership schemes with great success.
President of INGADA Foundation (on care and study of ADHD and associated disorders) and other non- profit foundations and associations.
He has an intensive teaching activity with more than 40 years of academic teaching in the Faculties of Medicine and Law (USC) and he has contributed to the dissemination of science with regular talks in primary and secondary schools or to the general population (more that 50 every year) and initiatives such as Edumotiva program (Xunta de Galicia).
Key note speaker in congresses, meetings or workhops with a total of more than 3000 invited talks in 70 countries.
He has received numerous awards, including the Rey Jaime I Research Award, the Adelaide Medal, the Galien Medal, the Galician Gold Medal, the National Genetics Award, Cruz al Mérito Policial, Cruz al Mérito de la Guardia Civil, Medalla de Oro y brillantes del Colegio Médico, Premio Fernández Latorre, Premio Prismas de Divulgación, Premio Galicia de Investigación, Medalla Castelao, Premio Novoa Santos, among others. Doctor Honoris Causa by 8 universities in Europe and America and Member of different national academies.
