Dr. Nebiyu Dereje Abebe is an epidemiologist, senior public health professional, and researcher with a strong passion for advancing public health research and implementation. He currently serves as the Head of the Division of Knowledge Management and Policy Translation at Africa CDC and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Public Health in Africa (JPHIA).
He has authored more than 100 publications on various aspects of global health agendas, including infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), cancer epidemiology, health systems strengthening, and implementation research. He has also contributed to the development of several continental guidance documents that enhance surveillance, laboratory capacity, emergency preparedness and response, strengthen NPHIs and research in Africa. Dr. Nebiyu serves in various national and regional technical working groups. He has led studies on breast and cervical cancer, particularly examining diagnostic and treatment delays, stage distribution, barriers to care, and survival outcomes. He also maintains active research interests in maternal and child health.
Dr. Nebiyu has extensive experience in clinical research design, mixed-methods studies, and advanced data analysis. He is proficient in statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS, and Epi Info, and in data management platforms like DHIS2, ODK, and REDCap. He also uses Power BI for data visualization.
He has founded and chaired multiple Research Ethics Committees and is deeply engaged in research governance. His leadership extends to public health program implementation, including health systems strengthening, global health security (IHR), disease surveillance, and emergency response coordination through PHEOC and incident management systems.
Dr. Nebiyu has held several senior leadership roles, including Technical Director of a Strategic Information project, Chief Executive Director of a specialized hospital and medical college, Dean of a health sciences college, and Project Team Leader in both national and international organizations.
