Prof Mohd Ali Hashim is a staff of the Department of Chemical Engineering as well as the Head of UM Centre for Ionic Liquids. He joined UM as a lecturer in early 1980, became the Head of Chemical Engineering Department from 1986 to 1990 and promoted to a full professor in January 1991. Between 1991-1996, he was the Dean of the Institute of Advanced Studies. Prof Ali is considered as an expert in solid-fluid interactions and ionic liquids for which he has received numerous awards, including the National Science Award. He has published widely in top ranking journals and he holds several patents in his area of expertise. From 2002-2005, he was seconded to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation as its Director of Science and Technology.
