Dr. Miquel Martorell earned his PhD in Human Nutrition from the Department of Fundamental Biology and Health Sciences at the University of the Balearic Islands, Spain. His doctoral research, conducted within the Research Group on Community Nutrition and Oxidative Stress, was recognized with the prestigious “Premio Juan Abelló Pascual I” from the Real Academia de Doctores de España for the best PhD thesis in the field of biochemistry. At the same institution, he also obtained two bachelor’s degrees, in Chemistry and Biochemistry, as well as a Master’s in Nutrigenomics and Personalized Nutrition.
He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and serves as the Director of the Centro de Vida Saludable at the University of Concepción, Chile. He is an active member of the ELHOC (Epidemiology of Lifestyle and Health Outcomes in Chile) consortium and a Senior Collaborator with the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD), reflecting his extensive involvement in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
Dr. Martorell's research focuses on public health, oxidative stress, inflammation, and the modulatory effects of bioactive food components on these processes. His extensive publication record includes work on antioxidant and prooxidant molecules in exercise, oxidative stress-related pathologies, and phytotherapy. These contributions have earned him recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate and as one of the Top Cited Scientists by Elsevier, Scilit and ScholarGPS. At the University of Concepción, he has been acknowledged for his outstanding productivity and the significant impact of his publications on the academic community.
Beyond his academic achievements, Dr. Martorell is deeply committed to outreach and community engagement. He leads initiatives focused on promoting Healthy and Humane Aging, particularly for older adults, aiming to translate scientific insights into practical interventions that benefit society. His work exemplifies the integration of research excellence with meaningful societal contributions.
