Miguel Martin is a Medical Oncologist based in Madrid, Spain. Since 1990, Dr. Martin is
fully devoted to breast cancer research and treatment. He is a Professor of Medicine at the
Complutense University and currently Head of Medical Oncology Service (Hospital General
Universitario Gregorio Marañon, Madrid). He received his medical degree at the University of
Valladolid and completed his fellowship and residency at the San Carlos University Hospital,
Madrid. In 1989 he obtained in London the European Certification on Medical Oncology.
His areas of research include systemic treatment in all stages of breast cancer, where
he has participated and led many national and international clinical trials. In 1990-1991
Prof. Martin visited the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of
Washington Medical Center de Seattle (EEUU), where he worked on high-dose chemotherapy
with bone marrow transplantation for breast cancer. Editor of several medical journals, he
was member of the International Editorial Board of the journal Lancet Oncology, as well
as other international journals (European Journal of Clinical & Medical Oncology, Cancer &
Chemotherapy Reviews). In 1995, Prof. Martin created GEICAM (Spanish Group for Breast
Cancer Research), a network involving more than 140 Spanish institutions and, since its
foundation, he is the Chairman of the Group. GEICAM has carried out more than 120 clinical,
translational and epidemiological studies in the field of breast cancer. Since 2001, Prof. Martin
serves as a member of the Board of Directors and of the Scientific Steering Committee of TRIO,
an international not-for-profit clinical research organization involving 45 different countries.
TRIO offices are based in Canada, France and Uruguay. Prof. Martin has published more than
200 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He is the first or corresponding author of original papers published in New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Lancet Oncology, Seminars in Oncology, British Journal of Cancer, The Oncologist, and Annals of Oncology among others. He has contributed to more than 250 presentations at international medical meetings and has presented invited lectures in several countries, including USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Sweden, Hungary, China, India, Argentina, Chili, Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. He is a full member of several scientific societies: ASCO, ESMO, SEOM, ASBD , EBMT, ABMT and MASCC. Prof. Martin was the Spanish representative at ESMO
from 2003 till 2006. In 2006, he was appointed European Liason of the International Affairs
Committee of ASCO. He has served as a member of the panel of the International Consensus
Conference of Early Breast Cancer (St Gallen) and is currently a member of the Steering
Committee of Early Breast Cancer Trialists Cooperative Group (Oxford, UK). In 2012, Dr Martin
was nominated Advisor of the Spanish Ministry of Health. He was nominated Board Member of The National Committee of The Spanish Society Medical Oncology (2013). In March 2015, Prof. Miguel Martin has been named Numerary Academic Member by the Spanish Medical and Surgery Academy. From October 2015-October 2017, Dr. Martin held the position of President of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM). In October 2017, Prof. Martin received the 2017 ESMO Award in recognition for his involvement in the organization of cooperative research networks particularly in the field of breast cancer.
