Michael Brainin, MD PhD Dr(hons) FESO FAHA FEAN FWSO Emeritus Professor of Neurology at the Danube University Krems, Founding Chair of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and Preventive Medicine (2000-2019). Director and Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University Clinic Tulln, Austria (1994-2016) Co-founder of the national stroke unit network and founding president of the Austrian Stroke Society. President of the European Stroke Organisation (2012-2014) and President of the World Stroke Organisation (2018-2020). His publications are focused on stroke care and stroke prevention. H index 65, >50.000 citations, over 1.000 invited lectures, editor of three textbooks on Stroke Medicine. He currently acts or previously has acted as Board Member of the European Academy of Neurology and was Scientific Chairman of its forerunner organisation, the European Federation of Neurological Societies. He received several awards, honorary doctorates and honorary memberships from scientific societies, among them the Marinescu Award of the Romanian Neurological Society, honorary membership of the French Neurological Society, the Presidential award of the European Stroke Organisation, The Leadership Award of the World Stroke Organisation, and the Daniel Lackland Award in Diplomacy and Advocacy for Population Hypertension Risk of the World Hypertension League. In 2024 he was elected as member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts as well as member of the Academia Europaea. He is or has previously acted as Senior Editorial Consultant for ‚Stroke’, Associate Editor of the European Journal of Neurology and member of the editorial boards of Neuroepidemiology, International Journal of Stroke, and The Journal of Neurological Sciences.
