简介

Professor Alam Md. Mahbub is a Thousand-Talent Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen, China). He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Kitami Institute of Technology (Japan) in 2004, following his Master's degree from the same institution and a Bachelor's degree from Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (Bangladesh). Prior to joining Harbin Institute of Technology in 2012, he served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and held research and teaching positions at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong). Professor Alam is an internationally recognized researcher in fluid mechanics, fluid–structure interactions, flow-induced vibrations, bluff-body aerodynamics, bio-inspired hydrodynamics, and renewable energy harvesting. His research has advanced the understanding of wake dynamics, vortex-induced vibrations, galloping phenomena, aquatic animal locomotion, flow control, and energy extraction from wind and ocean currents. His work spans both fundamental science and engineering applications, with relevance to offshore structures, heat exchangers, wind turbines, civil infrastructure, aircraft, underwater vehicles, energy harvesting, and bio-inspired robotic systems. He has edited five special issues, authored five books, and published more than 450+ technical publications, including over 300+ SCI-indexed journal papers (15 single-authored, 51 first-authored, and 168 corresponding-authored). His work has received significant recognition, with more than 15,500+ citations (h-index 64) on Google Scholar. He has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science since 2018, placing him among the top 2% of scholars worldwide. He was also listed among China’s Highly Cited Scholars in 2022, 2023, and 2024, ranking 791 out of 4,701 researchers. Most of his journal publications have appeared in leading journals such as Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Fluids & Structures, Ocean Engineering, Physics of Fluids, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Applied Energy, and Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews. He has chaired or co-chaired 11 international conferences and five symposiums, and has delivered more than 50+ keynote speeches. A dedicated educator and mentor, Professor Alam has more than three decades of teaching and research experience across Asia and Africa. He has taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in fluid mechanics, engineering mechanics, strength of materials, fluid–structure interactions, and flow-induced vibrations, consistently receiving excellent student evaluations. He has supervised more than 70 postgraduate researchers, including 12 postdoctoral fellows, 11 PhD graduates, 63 Master's students, and several of whom have received outstanding thesis and graduate awards. Professor Alam has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Japan Government (Monbusho) Scholarship for his master’s and doctoral studies; the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship; the South Africa National Research Foundation (NRF) Y1 rating (Promising Young Researcher); the China 1000 Young Talents Program (青年千人计划); Shenzhen High-Level Overseas Talent; Shenzhen High-Level Professional; Guangdong High-Level Talent Award, the 2015 Shenzhen Outstanding Teacher Award; the 2016 HIT Creative Talent Teacher Award; and the 2017 Nanshan District High-Level Talent Award. He has also received eight Best Paper Awards at international conferences. In addition, he serves as an editorial board member of Wind and Structures, Fluid Dynamics and Materials Processing, and Sound and Vibration.
