My research covers a range of different topics, always exploring background issues related to social and environmental determinants of health, health inequalities, health impact of social and health interventions, and integration of social and biological knowledge for causal explanations in health. Among the projects I coordinated stands out the Center of Excellence (Pronex) "Children's diarrhea: environmental and molecular epidemiology and repercussions on physical and mental development"; The Revac-BCG project, a community- based randomized trial of the effect of BCG revaccination on schoolchildren on tuberculosis, involving more than 300,000 individuals and whose findings contributed to defining the end of BCG revaccination; BAHIAZUL - Study on the epidemiological impact of a sewage program in the city of Salvador, whose main article was nominated for the 2007 Lancet paper; A Welcome Trust, focused on studying the impact of urbanization, migration and lifestyle changes and exposure to asthma infections in Latin America, with research projects in Brazil and Ecuador (Proj SCAALA); and an INCT in Science, Innovation and Health Technologies (CITECS). In 2016, I founded and up to 2024, I headed the Centre for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (Cidacs) at Fiocruz- Bahia, focused on the use and reuse for researching large databases. Cidacs projects include the 100 million Brazilian Cohort, which focuses on assessing the effects of different social protection programs on health. Since 2024, I am Cidacs Scientific coordinator. In these various projects and programs, I have worked with collaborators from various fields of knowledge (epidemiology, clinical, statistics, physics, mathematics, computing, microbiology, virology, parasitology, immunology, genetics, chemistry, anthropology, sociology and economics) and from different national institutions. and international. My projects have been supported by national and international funding agencies. I have published more than 700 papers in scientific journals, over 50 monographs and book chapters. I have participated in advisory committees on scientific or health policy issues with various national and international organizations.
