Matthias Rillig obtained a Ph.D. degree in Ecology from University of California Davis/ San Diego State University, USA in 1997. After a one-year postdoc at Carnegie Institution of Washington, Stanford, USA, he went on to become Assistant and then Associate Professor of Microbial Ecology at University of Montana, USA (1999-2007). In 2007 he was appointed Full Professor of Plant Ecology at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. He is currently Director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research, Berlin, Germany.
