Mary Cushman

Mary Cushman, MD, MSc, is University Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont (UVM), where she has served at on the faculty since 1995. She is Vice-Chair for Emerging Researchers of the Department of Medicine, Director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program in the Hematology-Oncology Division, Board Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, and Co-Director of the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health, an NIH-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). She completed MD, residency and fellowship at UVM and a Master of Science in Epidemiology at Harvard. With continuous NIH funding for 29 years, she studies risk factors for heart disease, stroke, cognitive impairment and venous thrombosis using molecular epidemiology approaches. During the pandemic she also engaged in designing and conducting treatment trials in COVID-19 and studies of COVID-19 epidemiology. She was inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, a journal of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis from 2016-2023 (opening impact factor 6.1). Her h-index is 175; she has authored >800 peer-reviewed original research articles, 25 guidelines and society statements, and >70 reviews or commentaries. She has mentored more than 30 research students, with a majority staying in academic positions. She has been an invited speaker or visiting professor at universities and other organizations over 140 times. Dr. Cushman’s career is characterized by emphasis on volunteerism. She has served or led innumerable committees with scientific societies and voluntary health organizations. She has served as a board director or councilor for the American Heart Association, International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society, and North American Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis. Among many accolades, Cushman received the American Heart Association 2018 Population Research Prize, their 2020 Award of Meritorious Achievement for her impact on promoting the careers of early career professionals and women in science and medicine, and their 2025 Council on Epidemiology and Prevention Mentoring Award. She is an elected as a member of the Association of American Physicians. Her University Distinguished Professor appointment at UVM is the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member.
