Mario Coccia

My main passion is to explain the evolution of technology and social change for human progress and development. The philosophical grounding of my studies is based on teleology, systems theory and G.B. Vico: “the cause of a phenomenon is whatever adequately explains it, the whole ground, reason, or source of it”. I use methods of analysis of technology mainly developed by sociologists, economists and evolutionary biologists to study the processes of technological evolution and social change. The idea is to make models, do experiments, and conduct observational studies that illuminate the nature and invariant evolutionary properties of human progress driven by socioeconomic factors and evolution of technologies. In recent publications I try to understand some of the main driving force in the evolution of human societies, such as the purpose of global leadership of great powers that may support path-breaking innovations, social change and human evolution over the long run.
