Marco Valgimigli was born on 6th of March 1972 in Forlì, Italy. He obtained his medical degree in 1997 with Summa Cum Laude at the University of Bologna, Italy. He performed his training in internal medicine at the University of Bologna in 1997-1999 and completed his training in cardiology at the University of Ferrara in 2003. In January 2004, he started a clinical and research fellowship in the catheterization laboratory of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, under the supervision of Professor Patrick Serruys, where he obtained his PhD title. In November 2005, he moved to Caen, Normandy, France to be trained in transradial approach under the supervision of Professor Martial Hamon. In June 2006, Marco Valgimigli took up the position of Senior Cardiologist at the S. Anna Hospital of Ferrara which then led to the position of Director of the Catherization Laboratory in December 2009. In November 2013, he moved to the Netherlands to join the Erasmus MC faculty as Associate professor of Cardiology and the Thoraxcenter, as senior inteventionalist cardiologist.
From 2015 to 2020 he worked as Director of clinical research of the Cardiology department, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, Switzerland and was appointed extraordinary Professor, where he was responsible for the organization, planning and execution of sponsor-and investigator-initiated clinical research in the field of cardiology and interventional cardiology. Local referent for the cardiopath PhD program, an international PHD program led by University of Naples, Federico II, involving University of Bern, Switzerland and the Cardiovascular center OLV, Aalst, Belgium.
Since June 2020 he is Deputy of Cardiology at Cardiocentro Ticino, Lugano, Switzerland and head of clinical research. He is Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at Università della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano, Switzerland.
Marco Valgimigli is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), he was member of the press committee and vice chairman of the EAPCI research committee and task force members of numerous ESC guidelines, including chairing the 2017 ESC DAPT update guidelines. He led as principal investigators more than 30 multicenter clinical trials.
Marco Valgimigli published more than 700 peer-reviewed manuscripts, with research interests spanning from coronary and structural interventions to anti-thrombotics. With an H-index of 102 in Scopus and more than 5000 citations, he has been awarded with the highly Cited Researcher title in the field of medicine since 2017.
