Marco Marchetti has a research record of 38 years in the domain of inventory and GIS for forest management and conservation at National level and in the Europe context, with 24 years of cooperation with the European Forest Institute and with experiences in several countries in Africa and Latin America. Research activities span the domain of development and application of new technologies. Current research focus is on multiresources inventory and forest mapping, forest management and land planning, fire monitoring and biodiversity assessment with special references to old growth forests, deadwood, naturalness and protected areas. He is leader of several research and application projects at national and international level.
As Chairman of the Board of European Forest Institute (EFI) elected in 2019, he has been for years at the head of this important international organization established in 1993 and in 2013 ratified by 28 European states and 44 countries participants with 130 members forestry research organizations as members, who work in forestry research in both the scientific insights that support decision-making processes, particularly in the EC and worldwide.
As Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board he had also the important task of providing advice to the organs and to the partners of the Institute on research, strategies and networking in the field of forestry, as well as to monitor the activities of research, stimulate new initiatives and periodically assess the structures
