Marcelo A. Perez (Senior Member, IEEE) received the D.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Concepción, Concepción, Chile, in 2006.
From 2006 to 2013, he was with the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Valparaíso, Chile, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow and later as an Associate Researcher. From 2013 to 2015, he was a Research Fellow with the Technical University of Dresden, Dresden, Germany. He joined UTFSM as an Assistant Professor in 2015 and became an Associate Professor in 2019. Since 2026, he has been a Tenured Associate Professor with the School of Energy Systems, Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology (LUT University), Lappeenranta, Finland.
Dr. Perez is a Principal Researcher with the Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E) and an Associate Researcher with the Solar Energy Research Center (SERC-Chile). He has coauthored more than 170 journal and conference papers and three book chapters. He received the IEEE Industry Applications Magazine First Prize Paper Award in 2012 and the Second Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics in 2016. Dr. Perez has served as the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Region 9 Chapter Coordinator, President of the IEEE IES Chile Chapter, and an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics.
His research interests include multilevel power converter topologies, control of power converters, electromobility, HVDC systems, and energy harvesting.
