简介

- Luis Carlos (born 1964) is a Full Professor of Physics at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. Luis Carlos is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (Physics) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (Chemistry). He received the Spanish-Portuguese Medinaveitia-Lourenço Award 2025, Royal Spanish Chemistry Society, the ICOM 2022 Award, for lifetime achievements in the field of optical materials and long-standing support to the International Conference on the Physics of Optical Materials and Devices (ICOM), in 2022, the Nanjing Tech Visiting Professorship, from the Nanjing Tech University, P.R. China, in 2016, a special Visiting Researcher scholarship (PVE 313778/2013-2) from CNPq, Brazil, in 2013, and the prize for Scientific Excellence from the Portuguese Science Foundation in 2004. ... - Luis Carlos got his PhD in Physics from the University of Évora, Portugal, in 1995, working on photoluminescence of polymer electrolytes incorporating lanthanide salts. He has been in the Physics Department at Aveiro University since 1996. In 2006, he was promoted to Full Professor. He was a visiting professor at the S. Paulo State University - UNESP (Chemistry Institute, Araraquara), Brazil, in 1999, 20012, and 2013, the Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, France, in 2008/2009, and the Uniwersytet Wrocławski, Wroclaw, Poland, in 2020, 2021, and 2023. ... He published 607 documents in peer-reviewed international journals with ≈33000 citations; average 54 citations/paper (h=86), 2520 citations in 2025, annual average increase of ~10% since 2009. In the last 10 years, 52% of the produced papers were published in the top 10% journals (by CiteScore) and 27% in the top 10% most cited publications worldwide (Scopus SciVal). These numbers correspond to 2.5 times the average number of citations received by all other similar publications in the data universe (Field-Weighted Citation Impact). He has co-authored ca. 600 communications in international meetings (117 plenary/keynote/invited talks) and was invited to give lectures (81) in EU, Brazilian, American, and Asian institutions. He has also filed 6 patents – e.g., luminescent molecular thermometers based on organic/inorganic matrices (ES2372683, EP 2447689, US 9,557,227 B2), 1 licensed. He was the coordinator of 6 EU projects (2 as consortium coordinator, 1 FET-OPEN), 23 projects financed by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), and 8 bilateral actions (total funding for UAVR>5,5 M€). He participated in 12 European and Brazilian projects and 20 ones financed by national sources (FCT and regional entities) (total funding>2,5 M€ for UAVR, since 2012). He has supervised 35 post-docs (2 Marie Curie), 32 Ph.D. (11 in cotutelle with Brazil, 5 with France, and 2 with Spain), 19 M.Sc., and 13 undergraduate students. He currently supervises 2 post-doc fellows and 3 Ph.D. students. In the last 20 years, 13 post-doctoral associates and 34 PhD students from 12 different European, Asian, and American countries carried out research in Aveiro (2–6 months). The mentored students work as professors (29%) or researchers (43%) in Universities and research Centres worldwide (UK, FR, PRC, and USA) and as permanent staff in private (national/international) companies (21%); 3 of the students got ERC Consolidator Grants (2018, 2019, and 2024). ... Luís Carlos is editor of Physica B – Condensed Matter and Journal of Alloys and Compounds, specialty chief editor of Frontiers in Chemistry (Inorganic Chemistry), and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology, ChemPhotoChem, Journal of Rare Earths, and Study on Optical Communications. He was co-guest editor of an RSC book on Nanoscale Thermometry (Nanoscience & Nanotechnology series).
