I am a research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), working on particle physics. After a PhD in Marseilles (France) on the ALEPH experiment at the LEP collider at CERN, I got a permanent position at CNRS in Grenoble in 1993. I contributed to the construction and the commissioning of a silicon pixel detector for the DELPHI experiment at LEP. In 1996, I joined the Laboratory of Nuclear and High Energy Physics (LPNHE) in Paris and started to study matter-antimatter asymmetry with the BABAR experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California. In 2002-2004 I was also a member of the CKMfitter collaboration. During a stay in Beijing from 2004 to 2008, I was a scientific attaché at the French Embassy. Then, I joined the Chinese Academy of Science and set up the France-China Particle Physics Laboratory (FCPPL). Upon my return to Paris, I joined the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN. I have worked on the search for the Higgs boson and the study of its properties. I then searched for new resonnances decaying into two photons. In 2018-2021, I was appointed Scientific Director at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (IN2P3) of CNRS. Since 2023, I am based at the French Institute for Research in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. I have extended my research activities to include muon tomography, a technique derived from particle physics, to study water resources in a volcanic chain in Kenya, with a view to their sustainable use. I am a co-author of The Adventure of the Large Hadron Collider - From the Big Bang to the Higgs Boson (World Scientific 2021) and a co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Experimental High Energy Physics of Scholarpedia. I was elected as an Associate Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences in 2022.
