Prof. Dr. Chan Kok Gan is a distinguished microbiologist and interdisciplinary scholar. He leads research in microbial genomics, quorum sensing, quorum quenching, next-generation sequencing (NGS), biosafety law, and intellectual property law. Prof. Chan holds both bachelor and master degrees in microbiology and law, and PhD in Molecular Microbiology. Prof Chan made several first discoveries in Malaysia and globally, including (i) introducing the concept of, and coining, bacterial “signalling confusion”; (ii) coexistence of quorum sensing and quorum quenching in some bacteria, and (iii) quorum quenching molecules from Malay, Chinese and Indian medicinal herbs and secured several patents,  (iv) characterising novel quorum sensing and quenching genes, (v) novel bacterial genus and species, (vi) he published Malaysia’s first complete bacterial genome 13 years ago when next-generation sequencing was still globally scarce. He publishes 485 WoS–indexed publications in leading journals such as Nature (>27,300 citations, h-index 83). He received Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) Award, JSPS Award, >15 French Fellowships and listed for 6 years by Stanford University World’s Top 2% Scientists (2020–2025) in both “Career” and “Current Year” categories. He is ranked the World’s Top 0.1% Scientists by ScholarGPS and is ranked First in “Quorum Quenching”, “Multidrug Resistant Pathogens” , “Genome ”by Google Scholar. He ranks as First Microbiologist in Malaysia according to Research.com. A novel bacterial genus and species, Chania multitudinisentens gen. nov., sp. nov., was named in his honour. Prof Chan is the leading expert in biosafety law, NGS, multi-OMICs (genome, transcriptome, methylome, microbiome, plasmidome, resistome, virome, metagenome, metabolome). Prof Chan is the Fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (2017), and elected Fellows of some international academices.
