Kathleen McInnes is a senior principal researcher and leader of the Climate Extremes and Projections Group in the Climate Science Centre in CSIRO’s Oceans and Atmosphere division. Her expertise is on coastal and climate change hazards such as storm surges and sea level rise and their impacts in the coastal zone. She has undertaken coastal hydrodynamic modelling in Australia and the South Pacific and developed climate projections for impact and adaptation assessments to assist all levels of Australian government manage and adapt to climate change. She led the effort to develop national marine projections for Australia, released in 2015. She was a contributing author on the IPCC second, third and fourth assessment reports, a lead author on the IPCC Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation and the IPCC Working Group 2 Fifth assessment report on Coastal Systems and Low-Lying Areas. She was also a lead author on the IPCC Special Report on Oceans and Cryosphere. She was part of a CSIRO team developing a wave energy atlas as well as guidelines for evaluating the impact of wave energy converters in Australia. She currently serves as a co-chair of the World Climate Research Program Grand Challenge on Regional Sea Level Changes and Coastal Impacts. In 2017 she became a Fellow of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and in 2020 she was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Lifetime Achievement.
