Joana Azeredo

Joana Azeredo is Associate Professor with Habilitation in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Minho, where she also is the Director of the Department of Biological Engineering and member of the School of Engineering Management Board. She is a senior researcher at the Centro de Engenharia Biológica, where she leads the “ Bacteriophages&Biofilms” group. Her research focuses on biofilm engineering and bacteriophage biotechnology, with particular emphasis on antimicrobial strategies and translational applications. She has played a leading role in advancing phage therapy in Portugal. She has authored over 250 scientific publications, with more than 14,000 citations (h-index 63, Web of Science), and holds several international patents. In recognition of her scientific impact, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses named the viral subfamily Azeredovirinae in her honour. In 2026, she was elected member of the European Academy of Microbiology. Joana Azeredo has coordinated multiple national and international research projects, including Horizon Europe and H2020 grants, and maintains strong links with industry. She is actively engaged in scientific leadership, advanced training, and international collaboration, contributing to the advancement of microbiology and biotechnology at both European and global levels.
