简介

Professor Jo-Shu Chang is Chair Professor and Vice President of Tunghai University and also serves as Emeritus Chair Professor at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). As a globally recognized leader in biochemical engineering, he was elected as a Highly Cited Researcher by the Web of Science Group (2019-2021) and has consistently ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists and was listed as the No. 1 scholar in Taiwan in the field of Biology and Biochemistry on Research.com from 2021 to 2025. His pioneering research centers on microalgae-based carbon capture and biorefinery technologies. In 2009, he established the world’s first microalgae carbon-capture pilot plant at China Steel Corporation, utilizing blast-furnace flue gas as the carbon source. This milestone was followed by the development of a large-scale microalgae cultivation and biorefinery facility at NCKU, integrating advanced technologies spanning upstream cultivation to downstream processing. Professor Chang currently leads Taiwan’s National Carbon Capture and Utilization Project and serves as the head of the Negative Carbon Technology and Biomass Energy task groups under Taiwan’s 2050 Net-Zero Pathway Task Forces. His academic achievements are reflected in an extensive publication record of more than 850 SCI-indexed papers. He holds an h-index of 156 and has accumulated nearly 90,000 citations (Google Scholar). His research successfully bridges frontier academic discoveries with industrial implementation, supported by nearly 50 patents and more than 10 technology transfers. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and the International Forum on Industrial Bioprocessing. He also served as President of the Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering Society of Taiwan (2019-2022). Beyond academia, he founded a venture company dedicated to microalgae-based biofuels, which has attracted significant investment from the Formosa Group. Through his leadership in research, industry collaboration, and national policy initiatives, Professor Chang continues to advance sustainable bio-based technologies to address the pressing challenges of global climate change.
