Jianchu XU is currently a principle scientist and regional coordinator of World Agroforestry Centre, East and Central Asia, as well as professor of Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Science. Dr. Xu is an internationally respected leading ethnoecologist who works in coupled human environmental systems. His projects are broad, including investigation of early warning signals of global change in the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, and change in ecosystem services and their resilience, vegetation succession through above-below-ground interaction. His program investigates important human problems such as climate change and ecosystem, forest transition, damming of the Mekong River, the impact of rubber plantations in tropics for biodiversity and hydrology, and climate change and alpine plant species in the most populated areas of Southwest China. Prof Xu is a highly productive scientist with over 100 publications including in world view in Nature and policy forum and perspective in Science, research articles in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Conservation Biology, Biological Conservation, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, Environment International, and Hydrological Processes and Fungal Diversity. He has supervised more than 20 PhD students worldwide.
