Jeffrey V. Lazarus

Jeffrey V. Lazarus (PhD, MIH, MA) is a professor of global health at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) and holds positions as Research Professor at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Hospital Clínic, University of Barcelona, where he leads the Health Systems Research Group and was awarded the prestigious Miguel Servet grant, and as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona. From 2012 to 2019 he was an Affiliated Professor at CHIP, the WHO Collaborating Centre on HIV and Viral Hepatitis at Rigshospitalet, the University of Copenhagen, where he co-led two European Commission Joint Actions on infectious diseases (HA-REACT and INTEGRATE - as scientific director) and provided technical support to the Global Fund and WHO and its Member States. Since Feb 2023 he has been an affiliate professor of pharmaceutical policy at the WHO Collaborating Centre for research and training in the patient perspective on medicines use at the University of Copenhagen. Dr Lazarus followed his decade-long (1998-2009) career as a health systems, HIV and viral hepatitis expert at WHO Europe with three years (2009-2012) as senior policy specialist at the Global Fund, then transitioned fully to the academic sector in 2012. He has had uninterrupted competitive funding since 2013. In 2015-16 he served as the first foreign Professor at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Medical Academy, from 2015-2018 as Board Chair of the foundation AFEW International and from 2016 to 2018 as editor in-chief of the journal Hepatology, Medicine and Policy. After having served as a core member of The Lancet GastroHep Commission on Viral Hepatitis (2017-18), Dr Lazarus is is a working group chair of the EASL-Lancet European Liver Health Commission, on The Lancet COVID-19 Commission public health taskforce and chair of the HIV Fourth 90 Consensus Statement. He is the author of more than 200 publications, many in high-impact journals. He has presented at more than 75 conferences including the European Health Forum Gastein, the International AIDS Conference (IAS), the International Liver Congress (EASL), the Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (convened by Health Systems Global – where he was director from 2012 to 2015) and the International Conference for Integrated Care - and in 2020 co-chaired two Wilton Park policy thinktank events. His current scientific work includes serving as PI of COVID-SCORE, Hepatitis C Free Baleares, HBV COMSAVA, and the global NAFLD policy review as well as a work package leader of a European Commission project on integrated health services in sub-Saharan Africa. He currently supervises 4 PhD students and co-coordinates the Master of Global Health systems module at ISGlobal. Dr Lazarus further serves as a Board Vice-Chair of the EASL International Liver Foundation, a member of the education committee of the International Network on Hepatitis among Substance Users (INHSU) and was co-convener of INHSU’s 7th International Symposium (Lisbon, 2018). In 2017, he was one of 18 recipients of The Economist Intelligence Unit Change Maker award, given in recognition of significant contributions to the global elimination of hepatitis C (http://pathtozero.eiu.com/).
