Jackie Y. Ying was born in Taipei, and raised in Singapore and New York. She graduated with B.E. summa cum laude from The Cooper Union. She was AT&T Bell Laboratories Ph.D. Scholar at Princeton University, and NSF-NATO Postdoctoral Fellow and Humboldt Fellow at Institute for New Materials, Germany. She joined the Chemical Engineering faculty at MIT in 1992, and became its youngest Full Professor at the age of 35 in 2001.
Prof. Ying was Founding Executive Director (2003-2018) of Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, a national institute to advance the frontiers of engineering, science and medicine in Singapore. She was Director of NanoBio Lab, A*STAR (2018-2023). She is Chief Research and Innovation Officer, and Chairman of Bioengineering and Nanomedicine of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, Saudi Arabia. She is Distinguished Professor and 1st Advisor to the President of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals.
Prof. Ying’s research is focused on nanomaterials for applications ranging from nanomedicine, biomaterials, diagnostic assays, energy storage to catalysis. She has authored over 400 articles with over 54,900 citations.
Prof. Ying has received numerous awards, including the American Ceramic Society Purdy Award, David and Lucile Packard Fellowship, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award, Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, American Chemical Society Award in Solid-State Chemistry, Technology Review’s Inaugural TR100 Young Innovator Award, American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Colburn Award, World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and Chemical Engineering Science Danckwerts Lectureship.
Prof. Ying was inducted to the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina in 2005 as its youngest member. She was inducted to the U.S. National Academy of Inventors and National Academy of Engineering. She was elected as a fellow for Materials Research Society, Royal Society of Chemistry (U.K.), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was named one of the “One Hundred Engineers of the Modern Era” by AIChE in its Centennial Celebration. She received the Service to Education Awards from Singapore Ministry of Education (2011, 2015). She received Asian Innovation Silver Award from Wall Street Journal Asia, and International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Jubilee Medal. She has been named one of the world’s 500 most influential Muslims by The Muslim 500 in consecutive years since 2012.
Prof. Ying was an Inaugural Inductee for Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame. She received the Brunei Crown Prince Grand Prize for Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement. She was the inaugural winner of the Mustafa Prize “Top Scientific Achievement Award” (2015). She received the Islamic World Academy of Sciences-COMSTECH Ibrahim Award, Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Science and Engineering Sciences, and Journal of Drug Targeting’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the first female recipient of King Faisal Prize in Science (2023) since its inception in 1984. She was named Woman of the Year by Singapore Press Holdings Her World (2023), and won the Tatler Impact Award for Innovation. She is featured on the first Forbes 50 Over 50 Global List of Women Trailblazers (2025).
Prof. Ying serves on the Board of Directors of Saudi Arabia’s Research, Development and Innovation Authority, Advisory Board of Saudi Authority of Intellectual Property, Saudi Ministry of Education’s University Affairs Council Strategic Committee, and Advisory Board of Society for Biological Engineering. She was on the Board of Trustees of Princeton University, and Advisory Committee of Academia Sinica Research Center for Applied Sciences. She was the Editor-in-Chief of Nano Today, leading it successfully from a magazine to a journal, with major increases in Impact Factor from 5.929 in 2007 to 16.907 in 2019.
Prof. Ying has 200 primary patents, 42 of which have been licensed. She has served on the Board of Directors and/or Advisory Boards of 10 start-up companies and 2 venture capital funds. One of her spin-off companies, SmartCells, Inc., developed a technology capable of auto-regulating insulin release depending on the blood glucose levels. Merck acquired SmartCells in 2010, with milestone-based aggregate payments in excess of US$500 million to further develop this nanomedicine for clinical trials. Prof. Ying also co-founded Curiox Biosystems, which successfully miniaturized high-content drug screening assay in the form of droplet microarray. Curiox went IPO on KOSDAQ in 2023.
