Passing the diploma examinations with excellence. 1986 - 1990 Scientific co-worker at the Central Institute of Physical Chemistry in Berlin within the research group "Nonlinear dynamics" of Prof. Hartmut Linde; start of graduation work about "Aspects of the dynamics of chemical reaction-diffusion systems under spatially inhomogeneous conditions and within electric fields" (advisor Dr. Lothar Kuhnert). 1990 - 1992 Continuation of graduation work with the research group of Dr. Stefan C. Müller at the Max-Planck Institute for Nutritional Physiology in Dortmund. 30. June 1992 Passing the PhD examinations at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Humboldt-University in Berlin with summa cum laude. 1992 - 1996 Scientific co-worker at PicoQuant GmbH in Berlin. 1996 - 1997 Guest scientist at the research group of Dr. Richard Keller at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. 1997 - 2000 Assistant professor at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Chemo- and Biosensors of Regensburg University. 14. July 2000 Habilitation in Physical Chemistry about "Fluorescence detection of single molecules in liquids and on surfaces" at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of Regensburg University. 2000 - 2001 Assistant professor at the Institute for Biophysics at Linz University (Austria), and simultaneously Privatdozent (lecturer) at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of Regensburg University. 2001 - 2007 Heisenberg Fellow of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG - German Research Council). Head of the Single Molecule Spectroscopy Group at the Institute for Biological Information Processing IBI 1 at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. 2007 - 2008 Professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry of Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. Since November 2008 Professor for Biophysics / Complex Systems at the Third Institute of Physics of Georg-August-University Göttingen.
