Houbing Herbert Song (M’12–SM’14–F’23) received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, in August 2012.
He is currently a Tenured Full Professor and Director of the Security and Optimization for Networked Globe (SONG) Laboratory at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Baltimore, MD. He serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2025–present). He is the Founding Chair of the ACM Emerging Interest Group on Trustworthy and Responsible Systems (EIGTRUST) (2025–present) and the Trustworthy Internet of Things (TRUST-IoT) Working Group within the IEEE IoT Technical Community (2024–present). In 2024, he was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA).
Dr. Song serves as an Area Editor for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal (2026–present) and as an Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT) (2026–present), IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence (TAI) (2023–present), and IEEE Journal on Miniaturization for Air and Space Systems (J-MASS) (2020–present). Previously, he served as an Associate Technical Editor for IEEE Communications Magazine (2017–2020), an Associate Editor for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal (2020–2024), and an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (2021–2025).
He has served as General Chair of ACM TRUST 2027, IEEE AIoT 2026, IEEE UIC 2025, and IEEE SmartData 2022, and as Technical Program Committee (TPC) Chair of IEEE AIoT 2025, IEEE NSS 2024, and IEEE GEM 2023. He has edited more than ten books, authored over 100 scholarly publications, and holds two patents.
His research interests include neuro-symbolic AI, anomaly detection, Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT), autonomous systems, and cyber-physical systems (CPS). His research has been supported by federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as well as industry partners. His work has been featured in numerous media outlets, including IEEE Spectrum, Engineering360, IEEE Transmitter, insideBIGDATA, StateTech Magazine, AUVSI, Security Magazine, CXOTech Magazine, Solutions Review, EdTech Magazine, PYMNTS, Fox News, U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Times, and New Atlas.
Dr. Song is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Distinguished Member. He has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science since 2021. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker (2020–present), an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitor (2024–present), and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for the Computational Intelligence Society (2026–present), Communications Society (2024–present), Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (2024–present), Vehicular Technology Society (2023–present), and Systems Council (2023–present).
His honors include the Research.com Rising Star of Science Award (2022), the IEEE Harry Rowe Mimno Award (2021), the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Publication Spotlight (2024), and more than ten Best Paper Awards from major international conferences. He has also been recognized as an IEEE Impact Creator since 2023.
